How To Buy A Good Baby Crib

There are so many styles, kinds and price ranges for baby cribs that it can boggle the mind. The first question that you may ask is where do I start and what I should look for in a baby crib. The most important point to be aware of is the safety aspect for the childs sake. Next you want to consider were the cribs will be placed. This is important when looking at long term use and getting the most for your money while still meeting the childs needs. There are some general tips that you can use when looking for a baby crib or if you are a hobby woodworker and want to build one.

Safety is always the first thing to be concerned with when buying a baby crib. For any new crib that you buy they should meet minimum safety standards as set up by the government. If it is not a new one you will need to check and repair any problems that you may find. All of the information here can be used for this as well to ensure safety on cribs that are being built. Check all slats to be sure none are broken or missing. This holds true for all the hardware as well. You should make sure that all the hardware is properly tightened. Head boards and foot boards are adorable with the cute cutouts but they are not safe so leave these out or, if you buy one second hand, close them up so that baby cant get stuck in them.

Crib sides are another very important safety feature that must be looked at when getting that crib. The slats on the crib sides should be no further apart than 2-1/8 and corner post no higher than 1/16 above the head or footboard. You dont want your baby getting caught between the slats. Be sure that all posts are secure and free of any hazards. Most cribs come with either one or both sides that can be lowered to attend to baby needs and cleaning. Baby cribs have different mechanisms that are used to lower the side. These should be checked for proper working order. On used beds many times these mechanisms can have problems which can allow the sides to fall if not latched properly. The same holds true for new beds as latches can possibly be defective.

Baby crib mattresses are another area that can be a safety issue. Make sure that the mattress, whether it comes with the new crib or you are purchasing one, fits snuggly on all sides in the crib. Babies move and can get caught between the mattress and rails or head and foot boards. The mattress should be kept in the lowest possible position or closest to the floor.

Baby cribs come in all shapes and sizes, but the best thing that you can do when purchasing a crib is to be sure it is safe and secure. Its a known fact that babies move wiggle and squirm. Babies are beautiful and look to us to protect them so do your checks on all cribs and ask questions before buying a new one.

The Most Harmful Agents to the Body

The best way to fully comprehend what free radicals are is to look at them from a cellular level. Here’s a quick Physiology 101 lesson: The human body is made up of various kinds of cells.

Cells are comprised of various types of molecules. Molecules consist of one or more atoms of one or more elements held together by a chemical bond.

Atoms are made up of a nucleus, protons, electrons, and neutrons. The number positively charged particles (protons) in the nucleus of the atom is what determines how many negatively charged particles (electron) will surround the atom.

The role of electrons is they are involved in the chemical reactions and is the compound the bonds the atoms to form molecules. The electrons surround an atom in one or more shells.

When the innermost shell has two electrons, it is considered full. when the second shell is full with electrons the process starts all over again.

The most significant factor in determining an atoms chemical behavior is the number of electrons in the outer shell.

An atom that has a full outer shell does not enter in chemical reactions. Atoms seek to reach a state of maximum stability by one of the following:

Loose or pick up electrons to either empty or fill the outer shell

Share electrons with other atoms to complete the outer shell

The most common way atoms complete their outer shell is by sharing electrons with other atoms. This bonding share strategy used by atoms satisfies the stipulations needed for maximum stability of the molecule.

Most of the time, these bonds do not tear apart in a way that leaves an atom with an odd, unpaired electron. When this does occur however, free radicals are formed; they are very unstable and react swiftly with other compounds in attempt to gain the needed electrons for stability.

The most common way free radicals attack is by finding the closest molecule that is stable and from there they begin the process of stealing electrons. When the molecule that is attacked starts losing the electrons, it becomes a free radical as well. When this process begins, it creates a chain reaction in which the end result is a disruption of a living cell.

Some free radicals usually occur during metabolism;at times the body’s immune systems cells will even purposefully create them to neutralize viruses and bacteria. However, environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and herbicides can also spawn free radicals.

Typically, the body is able to handle free radicals, but if antioxidants are unavailable, or if the free-radical production becomes excessive, damage can occur. Most importantly is that free radical damage accumulates with age.

Saving Money On Insurance – Oh the many, many ways!

The not-so-recent downturn in the economy has continued to create an onslaught of problems for homeowners. Now more than ever, homeowners struggle to stay on top of their mounting bills, not to mention meeting their due dates on skyrocketing homeowner’s insurance premiums. Fortunately, there are many ways that homeowners can cut insurance costs without sacrificing coverage.

Improving the safety and security of your home is essential in order to reduce large insurance premiums. Homeowners should install fire alarms, deadbolts and a monitored home security system. With monitored ADT security services, the majority of homeowner’s insurance carriers will provide customers with rate discounts up to 20 percent.

Insurance providers know the difference that security systems make in home protection. Studies have shown that a home with monitored ADT Security is three times less likely to become burglarized, which saves insurance companies (and homeowners) large claims costs in the future. ADT Home Security Monitoring may help to protect homeowners from burglaries, break ins, power failures, medical situations, fires and various other problematic conditions and situations 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

While safety and security additions to homes create the largest insurance discounts, there are many other ways to reduce premiums. Homeowners who smoke should consider kicking the habit to avoid large fees and all insurance-seekers should always weigh the option of bundling auto and homeowner’s coverage for extra discounts.

Some insurance carriers offer loyalty discounts for customers who stick around the longest. While staying with a single provider can be economically beneficial and is typically advised, it can be difficult for customers to tolerate some providers’ outrageous premium increases and the uncomfortable decline in personalized customer service.

This is why people should always shop around before selecting an insurance company and make the things that matter most to them a key component of their decision. Some customers prefer the quality and personalized customer service of local insurance agents. Younger insurance shoppers are frequently attracted to competitive low premiums and memorable ad campaigns. Of course, there are other rather obvious things homeowners can do to achieve a lower annual premium, like improving their credit rating and raising their deductible to a higher amount.

Adding security features such as deadbolts and home security systems not only helps to secure homeowners and protect the things they value most, but also benefits homeowners during insurance renewals, and at the time of resale by adding value to the property. Monitored ADT alarm services can help offer homeowners the protection they trust and the insurance discount they can’t live without.

Bacteria-Bashing Questioned

Clean bathroom fixtures and a tidy kitchen are not the only way to gauge a home’s health index. As a teen I spent a great deal of time around a friend’s home that onlookers would have sworn had a revolving front door. Set in a college town, that little house thrummed with the activity of older siblings coming and going, career parents on the run and a bevy of student boarders from all over the world calling it home. There was rarely a bare square inch of counter space in the kitchen for all the dishes that constantly needed washing, the laundry machines were never still and there was the subtle but continuous jockeying for an available bathroom.

They had a professional cleaning lady of sorts who gave the place little more than a lick and a promise once a week. You could not tell much more than six hours later if she had been there or not. The amazing thing I now recall from the years that I observed and participated in that milling microcosm, is that there was never a sick person among us, never more than a mild dose of the sniffles. Above the nearly always full kitchen sink, there hung a framed motto: “Our home is clean enough to be healthy and dirty enough to be happy.”

There is more and more scientific evidence that points to a truth that lies beneath that motto. A casual observer of many American broom closets today would note the labels on multiple cleansers are splashed with the word “antibacterial”. In bathrooms, it would be hard to miss the array of soaps, shampoos and other hygiene products on vanities and in showers with the same antibacterial designation. It would not be in the least bit unusual to discover a stash of disposable masks or latex gloves as part of a medicine chest’s menagerie. Our culture has been inundated with anti-germ marketing and consumers have embraced the notion of wiping those dastardly culprits out. However such eagerness, according to the hygiene hypothesis, can backfire on humans as we eradicate too much.

The hygiene hypothesis proposes that the lack of exposure during early childhood to certain infectious microorganisms can actually compromise an individual’s immune system. This thinking is not without its critics but it has more than enough plausibility in the science community to warrant some very serious study. In-utero, a baby is supplied with the mother’s antibodies. When born, the baby must develop an independent system of antibodies through encountering bacterial modules which trigger signals that in turn “educate” the child’s immune system. The hygiene hypothesis contends that the developed world is increasingly depriving developing immune systems of important bacterial and viral exposure.

Despite a recent spike in the sale of latex gloves and disposable masks with the media’s attention on H1N1 developments, there is a small grassroots movement among parents across the country determined to get their kids exposed to some ‘healthy dirt’. They scour the grocery shelves for soaps that don’t have the antibacterial label and rely on old fashioned lathering for adequate clean up. This still is a reasonable way to reduce bacteria count to most humans’ coping levels and remains an uncomplicated truth about our primary line of defense against infection.

Ironically, locating a soap in the grocery or drug store that does not have an antibacterial label is not such an easy task anymore, but it is very likely worth the search. The axiom “clean enough to be healthy, dirty enough to be happy” is something we should keep in mind the next time we ponder which cleansing products to buy.
