An actual 100% arthritis cure has not yet been discovered because of the many different forms and causes of arthritis. There are over 100 different types of arthritis and they can all be different depending on the individual. Basically arthritis occurs when your joints become inflamed. MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) is called a “Super-Bug” because it is antibiotic resistant, and it can be many strains of S. aureus bacteria; it is not a virus. There are ongoing studies and efforts to develop new and better antibiotics, but it is a difficult task because the strains are always evolving and becoming resistant to more and more drugs. MRSA is most likely to be contracted in hospitals (hospital-acquired infection), and studies show that the rate of contamination is as high as 64%. Random studies were performed on common hospital surfaces such as elevator buttons, door knobs, floors and walls. The tests showed that 80% tested positive for evidence of MRSA. Projections are for six million, world-wide, cases of MRSA in 2010, and the death rated is expected to be over 30% This could be considered a global plague. Most of us know about MRSA, some of us know someone personally who has contracted MRSA, and some of us know someone who has died from MRSA complications. It is of grave concern that the treatment options are limited and there are sources of infection now coming from outside of the hospitals.
In the last forty years, MRSA has become a big problem for hospitals and nursing homes because patients in these are facilities are there because of disease and surgery. These patients are in a weakened state and are very vulnerable because their immunity is lowered. Discovered in 1945, MRSA originally was treated with penicillin. Now it is antibiotic resistant.
A relatively new source of transmission of MRSA is the use computer keyboards since the implementation of computer technology in healthcare facilities. Proper hand-washing procedures and hygiene is critical since MRSA is predominately spread by hand-to-hand contact.
CA-MRSA (community-associated MRSA), have been identified since late 1990’s. It appeared to have no relationship to the healthcare-associated MRSA strain, as there were no risk factors involved such as healthcare settings and the weak and immune compromised. CA-MRSA is concentrated in people that are in groups or group areas such locker rooms, contact sports, gyms, prisoners and military recruits. Although anyone can carry MRSA, (the majority of research shows that MRSA occurs mostly in our noses) and it can enter the body through injuries, incisions and open sores, then there it can develop into a fatal infection. Many people that have MRSA do not have symptoms, and to avoid contamination always properly wash your hands, bandage your cuts and scrapes, and never use others’ personal things such as razors and towels. MRSA can be also picked up from contaminated keyboards, walls, floors, door knobs, as well as direct physical contact.
Headaches, fatigue, fever, swelling, pain and heat around an incision, wound or injury are common symptoms of MRSA. Infections that are more severe are in the joints, bones, surgical incisions, heart, lungs and bloodstream. Many times a bump on the skin will be dismissed as a spider bite. If it doesn’t get better in 3-4 days and you have a fever and flu-like symptoms, this could be MRSA.
MRSA can even infect our companion animals, and there is now a risk for our pets when they have surgery at the veterinary clinic. It is not determined if human contamination from pets is a risk for people. There are new strains of MRSA that seem to be crossing the human and animal barrier. Reporting of infections in horses began to increase, and studies are showing that the infection can be passed from horses to humans and vice versa. Five years ago in the Netherlands, and then more recently in Canada, there was a strain of MRSA (ST398) found in pigs. Since then, this strain has been found in the US, in both farmers and pigs. It isn’t certain that this strain will cause human problems, and it isn’t certain if it will affect our food supply. Should the ST398 be found to infect humans and/or contaminate our food supply, this brings into play and whole new set of problems and “what-ifs”.
If you are contemplating surgery, most especially elective surgery, for conditions such as lumbar and cervical disc problems, you should research all your options and investigate nonsurgical treatment options, because one major surgery risk is the MRSA contamination of hospitals. Many hospitals do not screen for MRSA, although screening could be done. However, if a patient tested positive for MRSA, even without symptoms, they would be isolated and this could lead to longer hospital stays. From there we could have overloaded, understaffed facilities with less careful hand washing, and more exposure to infectious people.

So many people go through their life in a low level of chronic pain. Some have lived with their pain for so long they no longer notice it. If you watch TV, you’ll see ad that blame your mattress and want you to buy their more expensive mattress. Other ads claim the pain is due to stress or pollutants and people find themselves looking for some type of pain killer to “take the edge off.” Constant pain can be at its worse when its in the low back, as it can make your daily routine more difficult, even just moving around or picking stuff up can be nearly impossible.
Chiropractic may be your answer for low back pain, whether your pain just started or is more of a nagging, chronic pain. This is because most of the time your low back pain is caused by muscles in your back that pull unevenly on either side of your spine, resulting in soreness, a pinched nerve or just plain aches and pain. Another possibility is problems directly from the spine, in which case you certainly want to find a doctor that specializes in the back and spine, like a chiropractor.
Not every chiropractor is the same, however. In chiropractic medicine there seem to be two specific schools of thought. The first is of the opinion that chiropractics deals solely with physical issues of the spine and back, and the alignment thereof. Practitioners of this traditional form of chiropractic healthcare use only their hands and sometimes the help of diagnostic testing to make corrections to the alignment of the spine and reduce back pain.
The other involves something called a subluxation, which is a single misaligned vertebra putting pressure on the nervous system, which may hamper blood or energy flow up and down the spine. Some subluxation based doctors believe they can solve nearly every bodily ill by correcting and preventing these misalignments with a constant regimen of maintenance, and may offer themselves as general practitioners as well.
For this reason it is important to look for a chiropractor with experience in sports medicine or who specializes in back pain. They will be able to either identify and fix the problem in your back that is causing you pain, or be able to identify if it is something more serious which spinal manipulation may actually make worse. The spine is a delicate area and one wrong move can leave a person paralyzed or worse. It is important to treat it with care and precision, but with the right chiropractor your lower back pain is in good hands.

As a final tip, try to get up from your desk as often as possible to stretch and walk around. Once every hour would be a great start, and really help you break the monotone and static sitting position you usually have. Even a 10 minute break can do wonders. Remember, the human body was not designed by evolution to sit in the same position all day. Take a break, and relax your back now and then.

Not all individuals are made to be tall. That being said, being tall is an plus. You can look at your DNA for hints to your height, but this will not in reality change your height. The weather in the northern hemisphere is beginning to warm up and spring turns people’s minds to thoughts of fitness and sport. They look out their running shoes from the back of the wardrobe and get out on the road. After all, it’s easy to do, it doesn’t cost anything and you can’t go wrong, can you? However, spring is just the time when all of us, having got lazy and overweight over the winter, overdo things and suffer injuries. Physiotherapists all over the country brace themselves for the surge in strains and sprains which occur at this time of year as our unprepared bodies are put through stresses which are too much for them. The commonest injuries tend to be foot pains, back pain and knee pain.
The typical mistake all runners tend to make at this time of year, not just novices, is to run too far and too hard to start with, or to run too often and try and progress the distances and speeds too fast and within too short a time window. Our tissues all have tolerances for physical stresses, which depend on our age, history of exercise, physical fitness and many other factors. If we overstep our tolerances we suffer from the typical symptoms and conditions of overuse injuries: delayed onset muscle soreness, muscle sprains, joint strains, iliotibial band syndrome, patellofemoral syndrome, bursitis and tendonitis. In extreme cases the body can suffer a stress fracture, common in the small bones of the foot, as the skeleton struggles to cope with the great forces that running puts upon it.
The solution to these problems is to take a graded approach to the initial training or to reduce one of the components such as the duration, intensity or frequency of training. If the problem is already apparent then reducing just one of the components may be enough to improve the situation so that training can recommence or improvement in fitness continues. A common problem with runners is to let small injuries linger without doing anything about them, leading to more difficult treatment problems later. Experiencing a new pain or ache should be a signal there is a problem to be addressed as soon as possible, and if it has not improved or settled within 10 days by treatment, analgesia or activity modification then help should be sought.
A walking and running regime is a very useful technique for a novice runner or someone restarting running who has reason to believe they may have a problem in getting started. I have used this technique very successfully as I got backache quite badly for a couple of weeks after going for only a ten minute run. I then decided not to run for a while until the memory of it faded and then tried the same thing again. No marks for ingenuity there as I got the same back pain again and had to back off for several weeks once more.
Then somebody suggested a walking/running regime which I started to do with good results. In a few months I could run continuously for forty minutes. A typical regime might consist of one minute running followed by four minutes walking and repeated a number of times, perhaps five. As the weeks go on the minutes running increase as the walking minutes are reduced
The usual way of sticking your shoes on and then doing a bit of stretching before you set off for your run may be unwise as stretching before exercise may make injury more likely rather than less. Starting off by walking initially and then walking faster with longer strides can get you warmed up and get blood pumping into the muscles.
Also if you are running flat on a treadmill more often in the winter then injury is perhaps more likely as you start to deal with the cold, the slipperiness and irregularity of outside terrain, all of which demand more flexibility yet make it more difficult to do this. The typical hard concrete pavement is not a suitable surface to run on as the impact is too hard as we pound along. Even though running is cheap it is not wise to skimp on expenditure for good running shoes, fitted professionally by a specialist in a running shop.

The discs in between the vertebral bodies are composed of two main parts: the outer layers being the annulus fibrosis and the inner material known as the nucleus pulposus. The annulus is tough and is arranged in layers rather similar to an onion, with the successive layers angled slightly differently to their neighbours to allow good strength in many orientations. The annular layers attach through the bones above and below, anchoring them firmly and meaning a disc cannot in reality slip out. Nerve endings giving both positional and pain information are present in the outermost layers of the annulus.
The inner layers of the annulus surround the internal and more fluid nucleus, allowing the disc to resist compression. The nucleus of a normal disc makes up about 65% of the mass of the disc and supports almost three-quarters of the load. The large molecules which make up the nucleus can attract and hold water at a level of 2.5 times their weight and until we get into our twenties the nucleus is about 90% water. This gradually reduces over the following forty years to around 65% water. Without a blood supply, the inner two-thirds and the nucleus rely for nutrition on the transport of water and other molecules in and out of the disc.
If the fibres of the annulus fibrosis are subjected to repetitive forces of twisting and loading then micro-trauma can result to the annulus which occurs in two patterns. Tears can run along the successive layers of the annulus (called circumferential tears) or across the annular layers (called radial tears), with larger and more significant tears developing when these two types coincide in one area. This can allow a much bigger tear to appear which allows central nuclear material to protrude right out of the disc and to compress or inflame the nearby nerve roots, causing sciatica.
Of the weight being transmitted through the spine, 80 to 90 percent of it goes through the back third of the disc in the first twenty years of life. As we age the spine alters and degenerative changes narrow the lumbar discs, pushing the forces onto the posterior facet joints. The facet joints respond to the increased stresses by becoming arthritic and increasing in size with arthritic changes and development of osteophytes at the joint margins. The exit foramens of the spinal nerves and the main spinal canal itself can be compromised by the degenerative changes in the discs, joints and ligaments, leading to nerve compression and leg symptoms, referred to as spinal stenosis in older patients.
It has been shown experimentally that the spinal structures which include the inter vertebral discs can be sources of pain inputs. In people undergoing operation, direct stimuli to the disc have been indicated to be painful. The proteoglycan macromolecules which make up the internal disc structure and attract water gradually break down into smaller molecules with age and replacement is slow. The steady breakdown and dehydration of the disc is increased by the fissuring and tears which develop in the annulus as the poor internal blood supply is unable to prevent the progress of degeneration.
Chronic spinal lesions may be related to poor blood supply across the endplates but the correlation between spinal pain problems and the degenerative stages is not good. This complicates the ability to relate the changes found on imaging such as MRI scanning and x-ray to the patient’s symptoms and so come up with a plausible cause for the pain.
Biochemically, painful discs have been shown to have lower pH than non painful discs. Reducing the pH in the discs of animals has also been shown to induce pain behaviours and heightened reactions. Experimentally deformed discs in animals have shown increased levels of neuropeptides which gives a clue to their possible functions in the transmission and modulation of pain in the spinal cord. Neuropeptides may be released in response to biochemical forces, stresses and micro trauma, causing the release of inflammatory chemicals and enzymes which break down tissues. All these may add to the increased deterioration of the discs and other spinal structures.
