What is Lasik?

It seems as if nowadays, no one wants to wear glasses or lenses anymore, mostly due to the hassle of having to put them on every day. As a result, vision correction surgery has been becoming more and more popular. Therefore, we are going to discuss what the Lasik eye surgery consists of.

Lasik is also known as Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, but most people just know it as Lasik. As you can imagine, not many people use this drawn out name. With that said, this procedure improves vision by reshaping the eyes with a laser.

During this procedure, the surgeon uses a microkeratome blade to cut a small flap in the patient’s cornea. After folding the flap back, the surgeon uses the laser to vaporize a portion of the stoma. After this is done, the surgeon very gently places the flap back into place.

Lasik works because the stoma cannot heal itself after the procedure. Once the eye surgeon makes the alteration, it will not change from how he or she left it. In comparison, the cornea, where the flap was placed, will heal on its own.

In case you were wondering what he cornea does, let’s briefly discuss it. The cornea focuses light and then bends it, which produces an image on your retina. By reshaping the cornea, the surgeon is able to adjust your eye’s focusing ability.

Not everyone will be offered Lasik. Just remember, your eye surgeon knows what is best for your individual situation. As a viable alternative, your surgeon may suggest either the Lasek and Photorefractive Keratectomy eye surgery procedures.

As a quick refresher, Photorefractive Keratectomy is where a surgeon does not cut a flap in the cornea to access the stoma. Instead, the surgeon removes the cornea’s surface cells to reshape the eye. In Lasek, the same procedure is used but alcohol is used instead of a metal blade.

As shown, Lasik is a wonderful tool for obtaining good vision, although it is not for everyone. Therefore, please trust your doctor if he or she suggest other alternatives. While you may have the power of the Internet behind you, only he or she has the numerous years of medical school.

How to Clean Yellowed Nose Pads on Old Prescription Glasses

Your prescription glasses may look as beautiful as the day you got them, but if your nose pads have begun to yellow, or better yet build up green gunk underneath, they become unsightly when people get close to you. What can you do about this problem? Is there anything you can do to clean yellowed nose pads on your glasses?

Why Nose Pads Turn Yellow

Nose pads are made out of clear plastic. They are in constant contact with your skin, and underneath the plastic the skin often sweats. The sweat, over time, causes the nose pads to turn yellow. On average it takes about one year for the nose pads on your glasses to turn yellow, and you probably want your glasses to last longer than a year, particularly if you are paying a lot for designer eyeglass frames.

Additionally, the reaction between the acidity of the sweat and the metal of the frames can lead to a greenish buildup on the nose pads. This buildup also contains dirt and grime from your skin. It is unsightly, and also quite unsanitary if you stop to think about it.

Can It Be Cleaned?

The answer to whether or not nose pads can be cleaned is yes and no. You cannot do much for yellowed nose pads. Unfortunately, once the nose pad has turned yellow, it is permanent. However, the green gunk and grime under the nose pad can be cleaned.

One way to do this is to use a pre moistened alcohol pad. Shove the alcohol pad between the nose pad and the frame, and let some of the alcohol leak onto the nose pads. Then, rinse it off with water.

If this does not work, use a soft-bristled toothbrush, preferably a child-sized one, and scrub the nose pads. You can even remove them if you wish to get them really clean, but make sure you keep careful tabs on the screws if you do, because they are tiny.

Some people who wear eyeglasses claim that soaking them for an hour in soapy water and then rinsing them will remove the gunk that builds up under the nose pads. Again, this will not help with the yellowed plastic, but if you have buildup it is worth a try.

Consider the Alternative

If you have yellowed nose pads, you do have another alternative. Replacing the nose pads is actually quite affordable. You can pick up a nose pad repair kit at a drug store or your local optometrist, but make sure you have your glasses with you, as there are different kinds available and you will need the right ones.

To do the replacement, start by laying out your supplies on a light colored towel. This will keep the tiny pieces from sliding off of the table. Then, use a jewelers screwdriver to remove the old nose pads. Once they are off, use alcohol soaked pads to clean the frames near where they connect to the nose pads. You want all residue removed before you put the new pads on.

Once the glasses are clean, install the new pads using the jewelers screwdriver. Do so gently, as it is very easy to damage these delicate pieces. If you feel resistance when you try to screw in the new screw, take it out and start again.

When you are done, place some clear nail polish or white glue on the screw heads. This way they will not eventually slip out, but you can remove them with your screwdriver if you need to later. Do not use strong glues, as this will make it difficult to remove the nose pads when they also turn yellow. When you are done, you will have glasses that look as good as they did the day you bought them, and you will pay very little for the revamped look.

Eye Health & Sexy Eyes

Imagine being in the geriatric set and having people tell you that you have “bedroom eyes”. This can happen to you if you know how to keep your eyes healthy for life. There is a way to do this and you’re going to learn how. So if you want sexy eyes until the day you die, then read on for info on how you can do this.

Are you constantly on a diet? There are certainly enough of them out there to choose from. In fact, there’s one for every part of your body. Do they work? Maybe, maybe not, but there is a diet that works. It targets your whole body with an extra added benefit, your eyes. You probably didn’t know that your eyes need a healthy diet too. This diet will help you get and maintain a healthy body and healthy and sexy eyes.

For the most part, we take our eyes for granted. Try closing your eyes and walking around the house for a few minutes. If you didn’t break your toes or fall over something, you did great. But how would you like to have to do that all the time? That’s why we need to stop taking our eyes for granted and take care of them.

Mother knows best. She told us to eat our carrots so we could see in the dark. She knew what she was talking about. Carrots and other orange vegetables contain beta-carotene, which converts to Vitamin A in our bodies and enhances visual acuity. Our eyes are better able to adjust to light changes such as daylight to darkness. If you didn’t mind your mom, you better start if you want to see after dark.

Right now you’re saying, okay, I can eat those things, but what about leafy green vegetables? Spinach, kale and collard greens are not high on most people’s favorite food list. But they contain lutein, which helps prevent cataracts and macular degeneration.

If you can’t make yourself eat green leafy vegetables, then tomatoes, carrots, red peppers, and squash are also high in the nutrient lutein. Now, there has to be something in that list that you like. I can make the whole list sound delicious by telling you that green algae can also be used to treat degenerative sight problems. Makes spinach and kale sound good, doesn’t it.

Having A Go At Lasik Eye Surgery

When it comes to eyesight most people would rather keep the perfect sight they had as children and not have to worry about having it corrected to any extent whatsoever. The reality is that most people will have to use some type of corrective device at some time in their lives and get used to the cleaning and irritation that are an inherent part of glasses and contacts. However, with the advent of lasik eye surgery it has been the fortune of many to be able to have their eyesight re-corrected so that they need not wear an appliance anymore. There are some problems, but they end up being relatively small compared to the benefits.

The primary benefit, of course, with the surgery is that it will fix your eyesight to the point that it is twenty-twenty or better. During the operation the doctor will make tiny incisions into the lens with a laser and when those slits heal they will reshape it.

Another great part about having the surgery is that these are your own eyes. They do not have to be taken of and cleaned every few minutes like you had just walked through a dust storm. They will not require that you take them out and put them into a saline solution every day so that they don’t acquire the eyeball gunk that contacts do. The constant cleaning, repair and expense of glasses and contacts will no longer be a part of you life. Since they are your very own, once repaired organs, you are in the clear.

As far as the actual surgery is concerned, it is done rapidly and with very little discomfort. Yes they do use lasers, but the concentrated beams of light are just to incise not burn.

A great thing about the procedure is that you are not required to spend the entire day in a doctor’s office. Just a very short visit is all that is needed.

If you make the surgery for an afternoon, then it will be perfectly all right for you to go back to work the next day with the improved vision. Your colleagues will be amazed, as others usually are, by the speed and accuracy of the procedure.

The only draw back to lasik eye surgery is that there are some problems that can occur. The most common is that there can be some slight irritation at the sight of the incisions. Some people have actually complained that there eyes are much dryer and that they are having a hard time with their tear ducts. The fact is that this occurs in only a small portion of the population.

People also envision what there eyesight will be after they have had this done. It may not be as good as you wanted it to be.

The doctor will want to check you out in this case and may need to reschedule another procedure in which you will have your eyes redone. This does not happen very often because the doctor’s are very careful with their patients.

Research is also an issue at present. How long the lasik eye surgery lasts, or if it is a permanent change, has not been able to be studied because there are not enough long term cases to find out exactly what does happen eventually.

Just take precautions as with most things and find the best, most reputable place around. Lasik eye surgery is a good fit because it has all of the benefits mentioned and very few drawbacks.
