Child Crib Bedding: Crib Dependability is Essential
Baby memorabilia does not belong in the ‘throw-away society’ of today, we tend to hold on to many of their items. Even so, when you’re expecting, lots of people will ask you if you’d like to have their children’s outgrown furniture and crib bedding. As baby rearing is very costly, one should be grateful for the baby bedding offered. Before using any baby bedding, be sure that it is completely safe.
Whether it is a Moses basket or baby crib, there is something very special about your child’s first bed. While you are refinishing your used baby crib, take the time to make sure it will be safe for your baby. You may have new looking bedding and crib, but you must always check them for safety purposes. If you are using a wicker cradle, check the ends to make sure there are no loose or broken bits and that all the connections are secure, and always use a new mattress because these wear out quickest. While baby believes everything should go directly into the mouth, protect your infant by checking the skirt when fitting for loose threads or other choking hazards.
The drapes should be fixed properly. Loose materials might be caught by the child to put inside the mouth. It is suggested by the Juvenile Products Manufacturer’s Association (JPMA) in America, and also by and British Standards (BS) in the United Kingdom, that you should not use old blankets and baby furniture if you can possibly replace them. Purchase new bed goods for your child’s safety. The JPMA seal of approval or the BS ‘Kite’ mark are shown on products that have been safety tested and meet the requirements.
As for me, receiving products that were used before is perfectly fine when safety is not an issue and when the furniture is in food shape, even if it is baby bedding. Since your baby will be in his or her crib for extended periods of time it is important you spend the time inspecting it. You need to take all the necessary precautions to ensure your babies safety and well being. Please remember the following points when you check your baby equipment for safety. Before anything else, you want to make sure there is no chipped, loose, or dangerous paint and no jagged edges that your baby’s clothes will get caught on. Make sure that the baby’s head does not get caught between the bars of the crib by making sure the spindles are no farther than 2 and 3/8 inches apart and that the header and footer boards are securely attached with no spaces for the baby to get caught in. To prevent the child’s crib from shaking or wobbling, always be sure to check for tight joints and fixings. You will want to make sure the side rail can be lowered or raised using one hand and when it is all the way up is is securely in place. Lastly, see to it that the top of the side rail is a minimum of 22 inches above the crib mattress, and that the mattress itself is firm and free of dirt.
I will always buy a new, snug fit mattress for a new baby. Nursery bedding may cause babies to suffocate, so you have to be careful to tie the strings of the bumper tightly or don’t use a bumper at all. Babies under the age of 12 months should not have access to the following in their cribs: duvets, quilts, sheepskin or pillows, while use of these items could cause overheating. Place a thermometer in the room in addition to using a combination of blankets and sheets. Babies are very quick little creatures, take climbing for example, before you know it they will have mastered the talent, that is why one should keep cords, lamps, window blinds/curtains and other pieces of furniture out of reach of the crib.
Always remember your children grow up quickly so it is great to have a wonderful, safe, and fun time with your child.
