Choosing The Best Cosmetics For Your Skin

Oh, how we loved finger-painting when we were children. Luckily for us women, we can still play with paints, only now we use lovely brushes and we call our paints cosmetics.

First, learn your skin type – normal, oily, dry or combination – and its characteristics. Skin is composed of a combination of proteins, collagen and elastins, so the first step in skin care is to eat a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise. If this seems a little like biology class, you’re right! Skin is the largest organ in our bodies, and the skin on our faces can be especially vulnerable. So we have to learn how to treat it right.

Skin is the easiest way to tell if we’re healthy, and the quickest way to judge our age if we don’t take care of it. For instance, did you know that skin renews its outer layer every 30 days? Plus it keeps our “insides” inside and protects our “outside” from bacteria. These are more reasons why it pays to be careful in choosing your cosmetics.

So you skin is clean and glowing, what’s next? Foundation! A good foundation is essential no matter what kind of skin you have, and it’s especially important if your skin is dry or oily. Dry skin should have a creamy foundation for extra moisture, while oily skin should have water-based foundation to avoid adding more oil. Normal or combination skin can choose whatever works best.

Now that you’ve taken care of your, your next cosmetics choice should be a good foundation, the best you can afford. That’s because this cosmetic is literally the basis for everything else. Don’t skimp here, because your skin type needs the best you can manage. Creamy foundations will help dry skin maintain moisture, while water-based foundations won’t aggravate oily skin with more oil. Either type of foundation can work for normal or combination skin.

Selecting the right shade of foundation makes most women, even experienced cosmetics buyers, anxious. That’s because shades can vary from brand to brand, and skin tone changes, depending on how much sun you’ve hand lately and whether you’re in good health.

The problem is that circumstances seem to conspire against you when making this cosmetic purchase. The fluorescent lights in most stores make you look too pale. Plus, we tend to try out shades on our hands, which usually get much more tanned than our faces. So here’s the trick: Apply a little sample of foundation to the inside of your wrist, and then go outside and check the shade in sunlight. If you’re happy with what you see, that’s probably a good shade for your face, too.

Remember what we said about learning some biology to choose cosmetics? Here’s a little more advice: Purchase the best cosmetics your budget will allow. Cheap cosmetics often contain chemicals that are better left off your skin. Plus, cheap cosmetics often look like just what they are — cheap! So read the labels, and if you’re even the tiniest bit unsure about the composition, don’t buy it.

Cosmetics have been used by women – and men, for that matter – for thousands of years to enhance our natural beauty. How lucky we are to live in an age when we can use cosmetic products that will enhance our skin’s health as well as make us beautiful.
