In past years, tinnitus had no effective medical treatment. Today, however, biofeedback, stress and anxiety reduction, surgery, and prescription medicine can all be used to reduce or eliminate the effects of tinnitus. Doctors don’t believe anymore that tinnitus is mainly a psychological problem or that it is caused by problems in the ear that can’t be remedied. Tinnitus can be treated with anti-depressant drugs such as Xanax. In one study, seventy-six percent of the participants that used this drug reported a reduction of approximately forty percent and a considerable reduction in the volume of the sound.

Research shows that intravenous lidocaine could control the symptoms of tinnitus with specific drugs, giving partial or total relief in all but 15% of patients tested.

Antihistamines are most commonly used to reduce the effects of allergies, but many people find that they help reduce the ringing caused by tinnitus.

Cardiovascular (Heart) medications work to alleviate symptoms of tinnitus by increasing blood flow throughout the body.

Anticonvulsant Medicine – This medicine is usually for the prevention of seizures but for some people it might decrease tinnitus symptoms.

Other solutions to medical treatments for tinnitus are homeopathic remedies and things you can do to at home to make the severity of your tinnitus more manageable.Many people don’t think that medical treatment will help their tinnitus, or oppose taking medicine on principle.
