Now You Too Can Get Breathtaking Hair Color at Home
Need ideas for coloring your hair at home, huh?
If you want your home hair coloring experience a successful one here are some lessons I learned the hard way. Follow them and you can have hair that appears to have been colored by the best colorists money can buy! Even if it was not.
Lesson number one involves how permanent you need the color to be. With your first attempt it’s best to go with a semi or demi color. These dyes have little to no ammonia making it harder to mess your tresses up. Then too trying a temporary color on for size means if it doesn’t work out, it will wash out in a few weeks. Just double check the permanence of the product in the box to make sure it matches your expectations.
Lesson two says don’t wash your hair right before you color it. Reason being any moisture left in the shaft tends to dilute the color. Yet don’t go several days without washing before coloring either. Any styling product build up will keep the color from properly penetrating your hair.
When picking colors don’t go crazy if you want it to look natural. Obviously this lesson doesn’t apply if you want something more in the shade of purple, pink or blue. But stylists recommend you don’t stray more than two shades lighter or darker away from your natural hue. Remember styles and tastes in color will change over time. The coloring agents themselves do not.
Ability to color our hair isn’t something we’re born with, right? So read every word of the instructions. That way you’ll know how to apply the product to your hair correctly and for how long.
Do the sensitivity test when trying out a new coloring product you haven’t used before. It’s best to find out before you’ve slathered it on how you’ll react. As nothing spoils a fun time like an itchy adverse reaction.
Newspaper is your friend when coloring your hair. Cover any surface the coloring can end up on including the floor, walls and countertops. Also adding a bit of corn starch is a smart way to thicken it just enough to keep if from flying all over.
Also, unless you want dye on the walls and ceiling of your shower, be careful when rinsing your hair. Trust me. You’d be shocked how far this stuff splatters.
Almost perfect. Just remember to dab a touch of lip balm on your ears, hairline and the back of your neck. You want to create a barrier to prevent the dye from staining your skin. As I’ve found stained skin speaks louder than a stunning new hair color.
Keep a damp paper towel and baking soda close by to wipe up any dye that ends up on any unprotected skin.
Changing the color of your hair is exciting. Just don’t get excited too often. If you color your hair too much your risk creating brittle dry hair from excessive exposure to chemicals like peroxide. This mistake isn’t easily recovered from. Then too you want to moisturize and condition properly after coloring to offset any chemical dryness.
What if you end up with a coloring disaster? Don’t try to fix if yourself with some home remedy a friend suggested. This isn’t the time for amateur hour. Henna likely won’t work either. Pick up the phone, talk with your stylist and get over to the salon.
Can you really get celebrity gorgeous hair color out of a box? Absolutely. Just follow the advice in these lessons learned the hard way and you can have a whole new you for less than you might imagine. For sure in less time and for a whole lot less than you would having it done professionally.
It’s true choosing your hair color involves more than the photo on the box. Answering the question how to select the right hair color means knowing about your hair color, skin tone and color of your eyes.
