Nursing Home Questions You Absolutely Need To Ask

Before placing a loved one into an assisted living or nursing home facility, you’ll want to be well informed about the capabilities, comfort, safety, and overall quality of care offered by the facilities available in your area.

It is important to ask the right nursing home questions to guarantee you have done your due diligence and feel good about knowing you went the extra mile for yourself or your loved one.

Asking the right folks about nursing homes is critical to finding the answers you need – just because you made a few visits to local facilities and asked the staff members questions doesn’t mean that you’ve done enough due diligence to know everything you need to know – you have to go outside of the actual facilities as workers tend to have biased views.

Outside of the senior care facilities you may find some interesting answers – feel free to try these alternative sources:

-Doctors in the area: ask your own doctor or a friend’s doctor any questions you may have. These can actually provide for great resources.

-Social networks: You’ll be amazed at how many people are or were in your situation in the past. Don’t be afraid to bring up your questions or concerns in conversation – chances are that if your immediate friends offer no advice then someone they know and trust will.

-BBB: the Better Business Bureau is always a great resource to figure out what facilities in your area have had complains in the past.

-Watchdog organizations: many assisted living watchdog organizations and web blogs have sprung to life in recent years. Examples include the Texas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (www.tahsa.org) or www.nursinghomesabuseblog.com.

-Police: the local police might have some insight to what has gone on in the past few years with regards to local facilities in your area. Don’t be afraid to ask them the tough questions!

As you can see, the list could go on and on. These five sources are a great start – but you should do more due diligence to ensure you’ve done everything possible to get the right answers for your nursing home questions. Before you know it you’ll have a much better grip on your concerns and hopefully be able to choose the place that is right for you or your family member!
