Plan Your Fish Trophy
Going fishing and planning to immortalize your great catch as a trophy? A nice fish mount is the perfect way to show off your hard work, and you can be sure to get the most for your money by following a few hints.
First, look for a good fish taxidermist before you set out. Find a person who specializes in fish taxidermy. This is a difficult field, and you want somebody with lots of experience mounting fish. The taxidermist’s studio is a great place to look at examples of their fish mounts. Make sure the work is beautiful to you. Your fish trophy will last for a long time, so you want it to look great. You should also ask your fish taxidermist about the different kinds of fish mounts you might be interested in. You probably also want to talk about prices for various kinds of mounts.
Second, before you go on your fishing trip, plan for your trophy. You’ll want to take a photo of your fish after you catch it, so bring a camera. The picture will help your taxidermist match the natural colors of the fish. Pliers will help you get the hook out easily. You don’t want to mar the fish since any blemishes could show up in the final mount. Finally, take ice and plastic to pack your fish in. Water will make the colors fade faster, so wrap the fish in plastic before you pack it in ice.
Lastly, think about what type of mount you want before you bring your fish to the taxidermist. Will you mount the fish on the wall? On the mantle? What pose do you want for your fish? Talking about this with the taxidermist will be easier if you’ve put some thought into it beforehand.
