Resveratrol: The French Secret to the Fountain of Youth?
Here’s one more reason to love the French! Another mystery sweeping the 21st century is the French Paradox. Scientists are still baffled why a nation of dairy-worshipping, wine-chugging citizens has fewer incidents of heart attacks than other, more diet-obsessed countries.
Americans, on the other hand are succumbing to this deadly disease despite a major obsession with health foods, exercise and dieting. Some even struggle with weight issues their whole lives. What do the French know that we don’t?
Red Wine: The French Are On to Something
French people are major wine drinkers, with red wine being the most popular. Experts are connecting the dots to see if this particular habit may be contributing to this major phenomenon. Even the U.S. Cancer Institute agrees – red wine is a hotbed of antioxidants. One compound creating a buzz in recent months is Reservatrol. Red wine, made from grapes with the skin still intact, is said to be teeming with this powerful stuff.
How Antioxidants like Resveratrol Can Help You
This anti-aging antioxidant is said to be a byproduct of plants in response to injury. Some experts have started studies to further understand its positive effects; and so far, the results are promising. But before you start becoming a red wine fanatic, a word of caution:
Oprah, in a recent episode, revealed that red wine only contains low doses of this powerful antioxidant. A person may need to drink up to twelve bottles of wine a day to get the maximum benefits. If you can’t stand alcohol and hate hangovers, here’s some good news.
You can also get the good stuff through cranberries, blueberries, grape juice and peanuts. Dark skinned fruit are packed with this anti-aging antioxidant. You can also opt for supplements that are available in the market today. Take note that you will need to seek medical advice first before trying on any supplement.
While health fads come and go, I personally believe the basics are still the same. Nothing beats a good diet, exercise, and the right amount of rest to keep your body in tip-top shape. Don’t mess with what nature has given you.
So the next time you’re downing a glass of red wine or enjoying some healthy blueberries, remember that they may be just be of the many ways to help get that youthful glow back. No ticket to France required!
