What To Look For When Buying Memory Foam Mattresses

Nowadays, there are many memory foam manufacturers and there are many types of memory foam out there. This increases selection but there have also been some low quality products out on the market. This is bound to happen because of competition and manufacturers trying to hit all the consumer price points.

The problem with low quality memory foam mattresses is because its made out of cheap materials. The memory foam is low density and is layered with other cheaper foam materials. It won’t last and this inexpensive material will give way and wear out fast.

So what should you look for? It depends if you’re looking to buy a memory foam mattress topper or a full out memory foam mattress. The memory foam in the mattress version is bonded to the core while the other is exactly what it sounds like: just a topper which you put on top of your existing mattress.

The main concern with the topper version is comfort because it can easily be replaced. Replacing it is easy since it just sits on top of your existing mattress. It will last approximately four to five years if its about four pound density.

When you buy a memory foam mattress or pad, you have to be aware of the density of the memory foam. No matter what the sales person says, here’s what you have to keep in mind. It costs more to make denser foam simply because of the materials going into it but denser foam does not necessarily mean more comfort.

What density tells you is how heavy the memory foam is per cubic foot. So as an example, if you were looking at a 4 lb memory foam density, that means that the foam weighs 4 pounds per cubic foot which is measured by one foot in length, width and height.

A denser memory foam mattress will give you more of that memory foam feeling. A 2 lb. memory foam density won’t be quite enough to give you that quality memory foam feeling you get from the higher density ones.

So when you are looking to buy a memory foam mattress, the ideal density is really 4 pounds for mattress topper pads and 3.2 to 3.4 pounds for less dense foams. Be a conscious shopper and do you homework before you arrive at the mattress store!
