Who Else Needs Home Hair Coloring Info?
So you want tips for coloring your hair at home?
Here are some lessons learned (the hard way) that can make your home hair coloring experience a successful one. Giving you hair that looks like it was done by the best colorists money can buy! Even if it wasn’t.
So how permanent do you want the color to be? As a first timer it is best to stick with a a semi or demi color since some dyes like this have next to no ammonia making them easier on your hair. While being more temporary, the color will wash out in a few weeks actually. Just make sure the product you buy matches the level of permanence you’re looking for and you should be fine.
Avoid washing your hair just before coloring it. The lesson here is any water left in the hair shaft might dilute the color. But do not avoid washing your hair for two or three days prior either. Because styling product buildup might inhibit the color penetration into your hair.
When picking colors don’t go crazy if you want it to look natural. Obviously this lesson doesn’t apply if you want something more in the shade of purple, pink or blue. But stylists recommend you don’t stray more than two shades lighter or darker away from your natural hue. Remember styles and tastes in color will change over time. The coloring agents themselves do not.
Ability to color our hair isn’t something we’re born with, right? So read every word of the instructions. That way you’ll know how to apply the product to your hair correctly and for how long.
If you’re trying one of the new coloring products or one you haven’t used before, you want to be sure to find out how you’ll react, if at all, before you slather it all over your head. That’s right you want to do a sensitivity test just like the box says. Nothing like an adverse reaction to spoil an otherwise fun experience.
When coloring hair newspaper is your friend. Use it to cover the floor, countertops, anywhere that the dye can land. It’s also smart to add a touch of corn starch to the coloring to thicken it. That way it’s not flying everywhere.
And be careful when you rinse your hair. If not you’ll find dye on shower walls the ceiling even if it’s low enough. It’s shocking how far this stuff flies.
Almost perfect. Just remember to dab a touch of lip balm on your ears, hairline and the back of your neck. You want to create a barrier to prevent the dye from staining your skin. As I’ve found stained skin speaks louder than a stunning new hair color.
Should you end up with dye on an unprotected bit of skin use a damp paper towel to get it up before it stains.
Changing the color of your hair is exciting. Just don’t get excited too often. If you color your hair too much your risk creating brittle dry hair from excessive exposure to chemicals like peroxide. This mistake isn’t easily recovered from. Then too you want to moisturize and condition properly after coloring to offset any chemical dryness.
What if you end up with a coloring disaster? Don’t try to fix if yourself with some home remedy a friend suggested. This isn’t the time for amateur hour. Henna likely won’t work either. Pick up the phone, talk with your stylist and get over to the salon.
Yes you absolutely can get celebrity gorgeous hair color from a box. As long as you take the advice shared here you can get a new look in no time. And faster and for much less than if professionally done.
